Dahulu kala di suatu hutan hiduplah seekor Bunglon. Bunglon dikenal akan kemampuannya mengubah warna dan memanjangkan lidahnya yang luar biasa. Melalui kemampuan ini, Bunglon menggunakanya untuk berburu maupun menghindari pemangsa sehingga Bunglon sangat membanggakan dirinya. Meskipun begitu, Bunglon adalah hewan yang sangat jahil. Dia selalu mengganggu para hewan di hutan dengan kemampuanya untuk bersenang-senang.

Di suatu pagi yang sangat tentram, terlihat Bunglon tengah berada di pohon untuk berburu serangga. Bunglon melihat ada Kadal juga di sana, sedang mengendap-endap memburu seekor Belalang.

“Wah! Ada Belalang nih, aku akan memburunya lebih dulu.” Ucap Bunglon yang  ingin mencuri buruan kadal.

Tak lama kemudian Bunglon langsung mengubah warna kulitnya dan berjalan pelan-pelan. Dengan senyap Bunglon mendahului Kadal dan tiba-tiba.

“Hap!”

Bunglon menjulurkan lidahnya yang panjang dan menangkap belalang itu lebih dulu. Kadal pun kaget melihat buruannya ditangkap lidah yang panjang padahal Kadal hanya sendirian. Kadal menoleh ke belakang dan ternyata Bunglonlah yang memakan buruannya.

“Hei Bunglon, mengapa kau mengambilnya? Itu kan buruanku!” Bentak Kadal, marah.

“Siapa cepat dia dapat, salah sendiri lidahmu pendek haha!” Jawab Bunglon mengejek Kadal dan langsung pergi.

Kelakuan Bunglon tidak hanya sampai di situ saja. Ketika dalam perjalanan pulang, Bunglon melihat Tupai yang sedang memecahkan kacang di atas pohon dekat sungai. Niat jahat Bunglon muncul kembali, dia mengubah warna kulitnya lagi dan berjalan mengendap-endap mendekati Tupai.

“Wa!”

Bunglon berteriak dan memperlihatkan dirinya. Sontak perilaku Bunglon membuat Tupai kaget dan jatuh ke sungai.

“Byur!”

Seketika badan tupai basah semua dan kacangnya hanyut dibawa arus sungai. Tupai marah. Bunglon hanya tertawa terbahak-bahak.

“Haha! coba saja kalau bisa, sampai jumpa.” Bunglon mengejek Tupai lalu langsung pulang ke rumahnya.

Tingkah laku Bunglon yang suka jahil tidak disukai para hewan di hutan. Selain suka jahil, Bunglon juga biasa menguping pembicaraan orang dengan kemampuan menyamarnya. Jengkel dengan Bunglon, Tupai dan Kadal menemui Kancil.

“Kancil!”

Sontak Kancil kaget dengan teriakan Tupai dan Kadal.

Mendengar permintaan itu, Kancil terdiam sejenak sambil menutup matanya untuk memikirkan rencana membalas kelakuan Bunglon. Kancil juga setuju karena Bunglon memang hewan yang suka jahil dengan kemampuanya.

“Aha! aku tahu caranya.” Kata Kancil sambil membuka mata.

“Ha, bagaimana Kancil?” Tanya Kadal penasaran.

“Oke, dengarkan baik-baik!” Jawab Kancil sambil membisikkan sesuatu kepada Kadal dan Tupai yang mendengarkan dengan saksama.

Pagi telah tiba, sang fajar telah menampakkan sinarnya dengan indah. Bunglon yang baru bangun, keluar rumahnya untuk mulai berburu mangsa. Namun langkahnya terhenti melihat sekumpulan hewan berkumpul di dekat rumahnya. Mulai penasaran, Bunglon langsung mengubah warna kulitnya menyamar untuk menguping pembicaraan mereka.

“Wahai Kadal, apakah kau sudah mengambil Jangkrik emas itu?” Tanya Kancil yang berada di kumpulan tersebut.

“Belum kancil, ini aku ingin pergi ke goa mengambilnya sekarang.” Jawab Kadal yang membuat Bunglon semakin penasaran mendengarnya.

Mendengar hal itu, seketika Bunglon berlari menuju goa di hutan itu. Dia ingin mendahului Kadal dan mengincar Jangkrik emas itu untuk dirinya. Tak lama, sampailah Bunglon di goa yang besar. Bunglon melihat sekeliling dengan teliti, dan terkejutlah Bunglon melihat Jangkrik emas yang ada di salah satu pohon sekitar goa.

“Wah ternyata memang ada! kini aku akan bisa terbang dan menjadi hewan yang istimewa di hutan ini, haha!” Batin Bunglon yang kegirangan tidak sabar. Perlahan dia berjalan sambil mengubah warna kulitnya. Ketika dirasa sudah siap, Bunglon langsung menjulurkan lidahnya yang panjang.

“Hap!”

Bunglon pun menangkap Jangkrik itu. Seketika dia merasa senang dan bangga sekali. Namun ketika Bunglon akan menarik Jangkrik itu, lidahnya terasa kaku dan sulit ditarik.

“Ellghh, kenapa ini?” Ucap Bunglon ketakutan melihat lidahnya masih memanjang dan tidak bisa kembali. Bunglon melihat ke depan sejenak, dan terkejutlah Bunglon melihat bahwa Jangkrik emas itu ternyata hanya sebuah ukiran kayu yang berwarna  kuning keemasan.

Bunglon sangat panik juga heran siapa yang melakukan ini kepadanya. Tak lama setelah itu, rombongan Kancil dan lainya muncul di hadapan Bunglon.

“Haha, kenapa kau Bunglon? Mau berburu pohon? Haha.” ucap Kadal sambil tertawa.

“Apa maksudnya ini, Kadal? Ini bukan jangkrik emas seperti yang kalian bicarakan!” Tanya Bunglon yang terlihat kesal.

“Itu cuma tipuan, yang kau tangkap itu hanya kayu kuning yang diukir Tupai. Juga dilapisi getah karet yang dikumpulkan Kadal.” Jawab Kancil yang masih tertawa melihat Kadal.

“Kenapa kalian melakukan ini padaku? Kalian jahil sekali.” Tanya Bunglon, marah.

“Ha, tahu juga kau Bunglon! Kau juga jahil sebelumnya. Mentang-mentang punya kelebihan kau gunakan untuk senang-senang. Sekarang bila kau terkena juga, biarlah lidahmu membeku sampai sengsara.” Jawab Tupai

Mendengar hal itu seketika Bunglon tertegun. Dia menyesali perbuatanya yang selama ini memang tidak baik. Seharusnya kelebihan yang dia miliki digunakan untuk berbuat baik, bukan keburukan.

“Maafkan aku teman-teman. Aku berjanji tidak jahil lagi dan akan menjadi baik. Maafkan aku.” Pinta Bunglon meminta maaf seraya menangis. Menyesal.

Akhirnya Bunglon dimaafkan dan dibantu untuk melepaskan lidahnya dari pohon tersebut. Begitulah kisah Bunglon yang jahil. Bila kita mempunyai kelebihan gunakanlah untuk perbuatan baik karena perbuatan buruk hanya akan menimbulkan sengsara dan dijauhi oleh teman.
