Rahwana yang notabene selalu saja digambarkan sebagai antagonis dibanding Sri Rama yang dicitrakan protagonis.
Padahal, cerita Sri Rama yang begitu romantis, kerapkali menjadi alat gombalan para pria untuk wanita yang dicintainya. “Aku ingin menjadi Rama, yang rela berkorban nyawa untuk menolong Sinta dari si jahat Rahwana.” “Aku ingin menjadi Rama, laki-laki hebat lan bertanggung jawab” dan gombalan-gombalan lain tentang “aku ingin menjadi Rama.”
Jujur, saya pun termasuk salah satu pelaku utama gombalan model begini. Tapi, itu dulu sebelum saya mendalami tentang cerita perwayangan Sri Rama dan Rahwana. Apalagi, setelah membaca novel karya Anand Neelakantan. Sebuah novel dengan sudut pandang yang paling jarang ditemukan.
Bagi saya, Anand Neelakantan adalah penulis novel yang handal. Setiap baris kata yang saya baca, terimajinasikan di dalam kepala. Seolah-olah sedang berada tepat disamping Rahwana dan melihat langsung tindak-tanduk seorang Rahwana. Membaca ratusan halaman menjadi tidak terasa, karena tutur bahasa yang ringan serta alur cerita yang sungguh menarik.
Kehidupan Rahwana dalam merebut kerajaan Alengka bersama bangsanya Asura terasa begitu mendebarkan. Dalam perwayangan sendiri, terdapat beberapa bangsa. Di antaranya adalah bangsa Asura dan bangsa Brahma (dewa). Rahwana terlahir sebagai bangsa Asura. Ia menyimpan kebencian dengan bangsa dewa. Salah satu ajaran yang sangat dibenci oleh Rahwana adalah soal kasta/status sosial. Kalau bahas anak sekarang “beda kelas kita boy.”
Kala menyerbu Alengka yang kala itu masih dipimpin oleh saudara tirinya, Rahwana bertemu dengan Bhadra, pelayannya yang sungguh setia. Bhadra bisa dibilang sebagai juru kunci atau man of the match dalam perebutan Alengka. Bhadra muncul dengan ide gila, yakni menyusup ke dalam kerajaan dan meracuni makanan para pasukan Alengka. Sehingga, kekuatan para pasukan kerajaan menjadi berkurang.
Namun, layaknya manusia pada umumnya, kemenangan yang bersifat tanggung selalu berakhir tidak menyenangkan. Apalagi ketika lawan ternyata tidak benar-benar kalah, tapi malah berbalik mengalah dan mengasihani.
Begitulah kondisi hati seorang Rahwana waktu itu. Saudara tirinya kabur dari kerajaan setelah penyerangan. Ia menyimpan sebuah surat besar tentang kekecewaan terhadap Rahwana. Sebab, Rahwana dituduh pengecut karena meracuni para pasukannya sebelum bertempur. Rahwana merasa hancur sejenak, dia menang tapi serasa tidak menang. Walaupun segera redam rasa kecewanya.
Dalam kisah ini, Rahwana digambarkan sebagai oportunis. Mampu memanfaatkan setiap kesempatan walaupun harus menghancurkan nurani sendiri. Sikap itupun tergambarkan dengan jelas, ketika mereka berhasil mengalahkan Baruna, si raja bajak laut. Kala itu, salah satu menteri yang sering bertentangan pendapat dan mempunyai rasa tidak suka terhadap Rahwana, mengusulkan agar Baruna dipenggal di depan umum.
Namun, Rahwana malah memberi perintah yang berbeda. Dia malah meminta agar Baruna dipenjara. Padahal, dalam hati Rahwana merasa bahwa usul menterinya adalah benar. Namun, Rahwana berpendapat jika mengikuti usulan si menteri, dia akan “kalah”.
Rahwana pun juga digambarkan seperti lelaki biasa. Gampang tergoda dengan harta, tahta atau wanita. Misalnya saja, ketika rahwana bertemu dengan perempuan cantik bernama Widyawati dalam perjalanan pulang setelah menyerbu beberapa kerajaan. Rahwana seketika begitu tertarik dan jatuh cinta padanya. Bahkan, Rahwana sampai melupakan pasukannya dan tidak berhenti menggoda perempuan tersebut agar luluh. Kelak, dari Widyawati lahir seorang anak bernama Sinta. Jadi, bapak dari adalah Rahwana itu sendiri.
Tentu ini mengejutkan. Sebab, masih banyak yang berpikir bahwa Rahwana menculik Sinta atas dasar rasa suka seorang laki-laki kepada wanita. Namun, yang sebenarnya terjadi lebih kepada rasa cinta seorang ayah kepada putrinya. Walaupun, Rahwana baru berani mengungkapkannya setelah jeda waktu yang lama.
Berbeda dengan Rahwana, Bhadra adalah tipe orang yang sungguh setia. Seluruh hidupnya diabdikan untuk sang raja. Ketika tragedi keracunan pasukan kerajaan Kubera (saudara tiri Rahwana), Bhadra sempat dimaki. Bahkan, Bhadra sebenarnya sering dipukuli, dihina, dipenjara hingga dibuang oleh Rahwana. Lebih parahnya lagi, pacar Bhadra pernah disetubuhi oleh Rahwana ketika ia dalam setengah sadar.
Tapi, hal itu tidak menghilangkan kesetiannya walaupun dalam hatinya tetap marah pada Rahwana. Entah apa yang ada di dalam hati seorang Bhadra. Namun ia punya keyakinan bahwa ketika dia mengkhianati Rahwana, hidupnya akan lebih hancur berantakan.
Klimaks dari cerita ini adalah ketika pertempuran besar terjadi. Sri Rama, Hanoman dan pasukannya menyerbu Alengka dalam rangka merebut kembali sang putri. Dalam pertempuran ini, Mandadori, istri Rahwana, dilecehkan oleh pasukan Sri Rama. Anak-anak dan ibu-ibu juga ikut menjadi korban. Pertempuran ini pun berakhir dengan kematian seorang Rahwana.
Pada titik ini, kebanyakan orang hanya mendengar cerita Rama dan Sinta yang berhasil menjatuhkan Rahwana. Namun, tidak pernah tahu akhirnya. Padahal di penghujung cerita, ada sebuah kisah yang menarik.
Pasca peperangan, Rama mendengar “bisikan-bisikan setan” dan mulai mencurigai Sinta. Isu bahwa “Sinta sudah tidak suci lagi” atau “Sinta sudah dinodai oleh Rahwana” membuat hati Rama ragu. Keraguan itu menghancurkan hati Sinta. Padahal, Rahwana tidak pernah sekalipun menyentuh tubuh Sinta. Jangankan menyentuh, mendekatinya pun tidak.
Walaupun begitu, Rama terus merasa ragu dengan kesucian istrinya itu. Usul untuk melakukan Agni Pariksha (pengujian dengan api) pun dilakukan. Sinta diminta untuk melompat ke dalam api tersebut. Apabila api itu tidak membakar Sinta, maka dia masih suci dan murni. Namun, apabila api itu membakar hangus tubuh Sinta, maka isu yang beredar dipastikan benar.
Bagi bangsa Brahma, itu adalah ritual yang sah untuk dilakukan. Namun, bagi bangsa Asura seperti Bhadra, itu adalah tindakan yang keliru. “Bagaimana menguji kesucian orang dengan api yang membara? Sesuci apapun Sinta, api itu akan melahap habis tubuhnya” pikir Bhadra. Sinta akhirnya melompat kedalam api. Namun, Hanoman terbang dan menolong sinta.
Pada akhirnya, cerita ini mengajarkan bahwa Rahwana tidak benar-benar berada pada pihak yang salah dan jahat. Begitu pula sebaliknya, Rama tidak serta-merta berada pada pihak yang benar dan baik. Mereka hanya berdiri pada dua sisi yang berseberangan. Saling bersengketa dan penuh kepentingan.
